Pine (Pinus sylvestris) needle tea has been around for ages. Botanically, pine trees belong to the family of Pinaceae, in the genus: Pinus.
It is believed that this tree has originated from Austria and Russia and then spread to different parts of the world. Pine needle tea is a centuries-old healing remedy for Native Americans. Pine trees grow in the wild cold and taiga forest regions of the northern hemisphere, particularly of Siberia and Canada. The female cones take two to three years to mature after pollination. At maturity, the female cones may reach from as small as 3 cm, to a very large cone reaching about 35 cm. Pine needles are rich in Vitamin C. The Vitamin C is readily available to the body when made into a tea, especially when pine bark is included. Pine bark contains flavonoids, which enhance the functions of the Vitamin C. The amount of vitamin C is reported to be five times the amount found in a lemon, which is 83.2 mg. That means a cup of pine needles would yield more than 400 mg per cup of brew. 8 times the Vitamin C as an equivalent amount of orange juice.
Pine needle tea is high in fat-soluble vitamin A, an antioxidant beta-carotene, which is needed for healthy vision (especially in low light situations), skin and hair regeneration, and red blood cell production! How to make pine tea
The type of tree ideal for pine tea is the White Pine. Pick at least 1 cup of fresh, green pine needles. The freshest ones will be bright in color, and will give the best taste to the tea. Rinse them in fresh water to clean off any surface dirt. Chop the pine needles into small pieces. Measure 3 cups of water in a large measuring cup. Pour the water into a saucepan. Place the saucepan on the stove and bring the water to a boil. Place the pine needles on a chopping board. Chop the needles into small pieces. Remove any faded or imperfect needles. Add the chopped pine needles to the water as soon as it comes to a boil. Stir the needles in the water with a wooden spoon. Bring the water to a simmer; let the mixture simmer for 20 minutes. Don’t overboil the tea; doing so will lessen its amount of vitamin C. Steep the tea mixture for an additional 20 minutes. Add the juice squeezed from one lemon to the tea if you like. You may let the tea steep overnight; it will be a deep reddish color and taste stronger if you do. Strain the pine needles out of the tea. Pour into cups and sweeten with a teaspoon of sugar, honey or maple syrup, if desired.
Pine tea – Side effects and cautions
Despite its long history of use, there is no conclusive clinical evidence to support the health benefits of pine needle tea. Do not use it to replace conventional treatments, and talk to the doctor before using any alternative medicines.
Caution: Women who are pregnant, or who could become pregnant, are advised NOT to drink pine needle tea in general for fear it could cause abortion.
Varieties to be avoided
Most conifers are safe to experiment with tea preparations, but there are three you must avoid!
