Inflammation of the sinus can be triggered by many causes. Some conditions can become chronic, but can be controlled through herbal and natural remedies.

A conventional approach to treating sinusitis is to seek medical attention. The physician will prescribe antibiotics, antihistamines and decongestants. All of these treatments produce side effects but not necessarily a long term cure. Side effects can alter the good bacteria, causing excess mucus and the antihistamines can elevate ones blood pressure.

Herbal remedies will treat the symptoms and fight the bacterial infection, but do not have the side effects of the prescription drugs. An herb with anti-inflammatory properties is Echinacea. Echinacea is recommended to boost the immune system to fight infections. Echinacea has been used to shorten the length of a cold and reduce the symptoms produced by colds and sinus inflammation. Liquid versions get into the system quicker and have faster results in boosting the system since it does not have to wait for the stomach to process. Use tinctures whenever possible.

Goldenseal is an herb when combined with Echinacea as a treatment for cold symptoms along with other respiratory infections boosting the immune system and healing the body. Goldenseal is a Native American plan that was used by herbalist and healers for digestive disorders and showed signs for use on wounds as an antibacterial agent. Goldenseal can be used alone or in combination with Echinacea during cold and flu season and to battle seasonal allergies and illness. Goldenseal has also been used in mouthwashes to relieve sore throats.

Other herbs that have been used by healers going back more than 2000 years are Barberry and Bromelain. Both herbs have been used to reduce fevers and decrease inflammation. Other Treatments

Home remedies are available to treat the symptoms and help reduce congestion. One of the best remedies is to drink plenty of fluids to flush the system of the mucus. Drinking plenty of fluids also thins the mucus allowing the body to process it more easily. Inhale steam during a hot shower or make facial steams to inhale healing herbs. Use the essential oil eucalyptus in hot water or a bath and inhale the steam to open up the sinuses and cleanse the respiratory system. Steams can be done two to three times daily if necessary to relive the symptoms and allow for easier breathing. Flush the sinuses with a saline solution several times a day by using what is called a Neti pot or flushing the sinuses gently using a syringe to flush saline water through the sinuses over a sink.

When acute symptoms persist longer than two weeks or 14 days, one should seek medical attention as this could have progressed to more than just a sinus infection or sinusitis. Herbal remedies can react to other prescribed medications. Discuss all supplements with a physician. Individuals respond to herbal remedies differently.
