Make a Batch for those Winter Months

It’s not uncommon to hear of stories passed down, of grandmothers showing their daughters and grandchildren how to make and prepare Fire Cider. Because of the ingredients, Fire Cider packs a powerful punch when it comes to those bothersome colds and flus in the winter months. Because it has many immune system boosting constituents, it’s no wonder it’s been used for hundreds of years to stay healthy. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. So, what’s in it? Some of you may be surprised that you may have the majority of the ingredients already in your own kitchen. Making a basic Fire Cider is fairly easy, granted you are willing to wait the time it takes to macerate. Here’s a list of the most commonly used ingredients-Ginger Root, Horseradish Root, Onion, Garlic, Jalapeno Peppers,Lemon, Rosemary,Tumeric, Apple Cider Vinegar, and Raw Honey. While this is just a blueprint of what’s in Fire Cider, you can always add your own spices to make it personal, as well as to provide further positive benefits. Once the proper amount of these ingredients (to taste), have been established, take a sterile quart mason jar, and cover with cheesecloth or if you prefer, parchment paper. This will keep the metal (which could potentially have adverse effects on the quality of the Fire Cider), away from the cider. Be sure to leave a little bit of headspace in the jar, approximately 1/2 inch to 1 inch. Put the lid tightly on the jar, and put the jar in a cool, dark place. To completely get the maximized benefits from the Fire Cider, it will have to macerate about a month. Some people say two to three weeks, but others say more towards four. The best thing to do is to shake you jar gently every day, this will help all the ingredients mix well, as well as release it’s goodness. After the weeks have passed, take out your jar and taste what you’ve made. Now is the time to add a little sweetness if you prefer, and raw honey is the best for Fire Cider. You can add Fire Cider to veggie juices, to salads, rice, etc. or, you could also just take a tablespoon in the morning if you’re looking for a general tonic, or up to 3 tablespoons if you feel an infection or cold coming on.
