Cinnamon is a spice with a distinct fragrance and comes from the inner bark of a tropical tree. The sweet smelling, warm sticks on your spice shelf is not just a wonderful herb but it also has a large range of clinical benefits. You must be aware of the culinary use of cinnamon in flavoring baked goods and drinks as well as stews and sauces. But did you know that it has long been used in different cultures of the world as almost ‘panacea’ and finds use in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda. Cinnamon has been in wide use in the cuisines prepared in Asia, Middle East and North Africa.

Researcher’s take on the role of cinnamon in diabetes

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder related with insulin resistance, increased glucose and lipids, inflammation, reduced antioxidant activity, increased weight gain and increased glycation of proteins. Research studies have shown that Cinnamon can reduce all the above factors in animal and human subjects. The research has provided the evidence for beneficial effects of cinnamon whether used in whole form or Cinnamon extract. Latest research has shown that patients suffering from Type @ diabetes when regularly take eat cinnamon showed a faster improvement in the fasting blood glucose and cholesterol levels. Time and again it has been concluded that cinnamon has antiglycemic effect in diabetic patients and hence its use has been proven to be beneficial. Hence, the daily use of ½ to 1 teaspoon is definitely beneficial in reducing blood sugar levels, though there is insufficient evidence and hence limited clinical use. Some researchers have also stated that Cinnamon may be playing the role of insulin substitute in patients of diabetes. Cinnamon has been effective in lowering blood sugar levels because it has a similar effect on the body as insulin which is produced in insufficient amounts in those suffering from Diabetes.

Can cinnamon be used as a treatment for diabetes?

As one of the oldest and most frequently eaten spice, cinnamon has been used as an herbal remedy in Ayurveda. The volatile oils present in cinnamon such as cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl acetate and cinnamyl alcohol are responsible for its sugar lowering effects. Cinnamon can be used as a food adjunct in diabetics but it cannot take over in the treatment of diabetes. Cinnamon should be made part of regular diet since it can reduce glucose in the blood, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol. The reasonable cost, easy availability and general safety profile have made cinnamon a great option for diabetic population.

Almost 1.2 teaspoon of cinnamon can show improved insulin sensitivity and blood glucose control. It can improve insulin sensitivity and show a better blood glucose control. AN improvement in the insulin resistance also finds help in controlling weight as well as reducing the risk of heart diseases. Along with an improvement in blood glucose, research studies have also shown cinnamon to be beneficial in improving triglycerides, blood pressure and LDL cholesterol.

How does it work?

Various models have been proposed for the activity of cinnamon in lowering blood sugar level. There are evidences suggesting that cinnamon polyphenols mimic insulin like activity and hence help the individuals suffering with Type II diabetes. Cinnamon constituents can also increase the number of insulin receptors and glucose transporters both of which are important in glucose absorption and metabolism. Different research studies on animals and humans have concluded that cinnamon reduces the metabolism of glucose and lipids in patients with Type II diabetes mellitus and can act as an alternative for the treatment of diabetes. There are still doubts regarding the whole body sensitivity of insulin and the ability of cinnamon in controlling type II diabetes remains questionable, but studies have confirmed its benefits in diabetes when used as food adjunct. Cinnamon can also alleviate the symptoms associated with diabetes.

The nutritional benefits

Apart from the clinical efficacy in reducing blood sugar levels and managing diabetes, one teaspoon of cinnamon contains 28 mg of calcium, 1 mg of iron, 1+ gm of fiber, and a good percentage of Vitamin C, Vitamin K and manganese. It also has carbohydrates in it. The amazing nutritional quality of cinnamon make it a must have spice in your daily recipes.

How to take Cinnamon

Cinnamon can be made part of many recipes and taken regularly in diet. It is one of the important ingredients in baking. It has also been used in preparing turkey, stews, sauces and curries. You can also sprinkle cinnamon on marmalade toast and have it for the health reasons. Cinnamon can be added to coffee, top yogurt, cottage cheese or ricotta. Unsweetened soy milk with cinnamon can also be taken or a dash of honey can be added to the above for sweetening effect.

There are many other ways in which cinnamon can be taken as a remedy of diabetes.

1) Boil some cinnamon sticks, cool it and add a slice of orange and drink the liquid.

2) Cinnamon stick can be added to rice while cooking for beautiful fragrant flavor and enormous health benefit.

3) Cinnamon tea can be prepared and a cup daily will show enormous health benefits.

4) Cinnamon powder can be added to pancake mixtures. Fresh grounded cinnamon can also be sprinkled on breakfast cereals. Whole cinnamon sticks can used to prepare squash soup which is a great and healthy soup.
5) The flavor of cinnamon allows it to replace small amounts of sugars in stove top recipes, sauces, meat and vegetable dishes. This is helpful in reducing the sugar intake as well as lowering the blood sugar level.

6) The easiest home remedy for diabetes is to sprinkle cinnamon into hot and cold cereal, yogurt, coffee or tea once a day as it has been suggested by experts that about ½ teaspoon of cinnamon a day can help in reducing the blood sugar and reduce the risk for developing dangerous complications of diabetes.

Incorporate cinnamon in your daily diet for a month and experience the amazing health benefits.

Cirrhosis of the liver is the serious end of liver disease. If you have it, you already have liver disease, and your liver is basically already being replaced by scar tissue. It can be caused by a few things, alcoholism is one of them, as well as Hepatitis B and C, and also fatty liver disease.Fluid retention in the abdomen called Ascites, and can be painful, and can be an increased risk of infection. Cirrhosis of the liver is something that cannot be cured, it is something that can only be managed. If the liver is damaged enough, possibly the only option is a liver transplant.

What’s with the liver?

The liver is an extremely important organ in the human body. Without it, it cannot function properly. When the liver is only working at a fraction of it’s capabilities, the body suffers. A few side effects of a struggling liver is- jaundice, fluid retention, loss of sex drive, reddened palms, increased breast size in males, and a musty breath odor. Other side effects are bruising and bleeding easily, not removing toxins from the blood so there is a decreased brain function, forgetfulness, and minor kidney injury.

What can I do to help myself?

Because Cirrohis of the liver is irreversible, there are not many options, other than managing the symptoms. If you are an alcoholic and that is the cause of the Cirrohis, please, refrain from drinking as it will only cause more damage to the liver. As always, drinking the proper amount of water a day, and a healthy, whole food diet, is going to be the best start you can take to help healing the liver. There are also a great many herbs to help repair the damage on the tissue of the liver, as well as nourish the body completely.

The Great World of Herbs

If you interested in adding herbs to your diet, in hopes of helping alleviate the symptoms of Cirrhosis of the liver, today is a good time to start. It is always important to do any and all research on the effects some herbs could have with medication. This is especially important in those with Cirrhosis of the liver, because of the body’s decreased ability to process medications. One of the top diuretic herbs for helping boost liver function, is Blue Vervain. It has been used for thousands of years, and this little purple blue flower has been known to not only help increase liver function, but aid in digestion. This is helpful in the fluid retention often experienced by those with Cirrhosis of the liver. Dandelion is another useful diuretic that could help the liver. Because it is widely available, using Dandelion could potentially be easier than Blue Vervain. Dandelion helps eliminate the toxins from the kidneys, liver and gallbladder.Milk Thistle seeds are also another consideration. Milk thistle can help protect the cell membranes in liver cells, and can neutralize the toxins found there.Stinging Nettle is also another great herb that will help improve liver function and eliminate the toxins in the liver, which is important in the Cirrhosis of the liver patients. Another indispensable herb, is Agrimony. Agrimony is native to Europe, and maybe because of it’s simplicity, is why it is commonly used to help restore organ functions. It is a relaxant that helps put more order to the digestive system. Agrimony is also great for helping release the tension that can be ultimately associated with having a debilitating disease.

Cautions, Side Effects

If you continue to drink alcohol and you have cirrhosis of the liver, please feel free to write your own eulogy. Maybe that’s harsh, and maybe many do not wish to face the reality of cirrhosis of the liver, but, if you have cirrhosis of the liver because of alcoholism, the only way to even remotely try to reverse it, is to stop drinking. Your body is already trying to repair itself, to keep feeding the body with the same poison that put it in that situation to begin with, is not only detrimental, but will put you on a fast track to the grave. Also, please exercise caution always with herbs, as it may interact with medications. Always ask your doctor if you are uncertain, before imbibing in any or all herbs. Some herbs have a tendency to react with each other, so please be certain of the effects each individual herb has, or it can potentially be adverse. Also, few people have been known to be allergic to specific groups or families of herbs or flowers, and may potentially experience the same negative side effects, even if the flower is a close cousin of the known allergen. This information gathered about herbs has been tested for hundreds, if not thousands of years, and many people have tried and used these herbs successfully.

Nothing is probably more painful, uncomfortable, and unsettling as chronic kidney stones. Kidney stones can form for a number of reasons. While kidney stones are not actually stones, they are crystals that have formed in the kidneys from dietary minerals in the urine. While the majority of kidney stones often pass on their own, via urine, in some rare cases, the kidney stones are too large and require some invasion to extract them. Whatever the size, kidney stones are quite painful and can be severe. This is especially so in individuals who have chronic kidney stones. A few reasons why kidney stones form, is an imbalance in the intake in the diet. Too much protein or processed foods, sugars, high fructose corn syrup and sodium, could potentially be an environment susceptible to kidney stones. Another reason could be dehydration. It is vital, not only for kidney stones, but many other diseases and ailments, to consume the suggested amount of water a day. While kidney stones are more prone to affect those with Chron’s Disease, kidney stones are non discriminatory.

Why is this happening?

Diseases and lack of proper nutrition play an important part in the development of kidney stones, but there many be other factors. A build of calcium in the body, could also play out in chronic kidney stones. Drinking water that his exceptionally high in flouride is another reason a person could develop them.People are more likely to develop chronic kidney stones if their body is fighting another infection. Because your body’s system is compromised, the development of kidney stones is more likely. Regardless of why, kidney stones are painful, and can be excruciating in the time waiting the passage of a kidney stone. Another side effect may be fever, nausea, and vomiting. The pain from a kidney stones can also cause severe pain around the upper thighs, lower back and abdomen.

The Benefits of Herbs in Everyday Life for Kidney Stones

Horsetail is one of the leading herbs for kidney stones. Horsetail will enter the system, and gently help break up kidney stones. It can also help move kidney stones out of the body faster. Usually this is done by drinking two to three cups of tea daily. Because minerals and calcium can build up in the kidneys causing kidney stones, herbal teas that can help eliminate that are Thyme, Knotgrass, and Dandelion. Dandelion is a diuretic that will increase the elimination of urine, helping the body heal faster. Other diuretics that are useful for kidney stones is Nettle, Corn Silk, and Parsley. Each of theses are high in vitamins and minerals and aids the body in repairing itself and ridding it of kidney stones. I seems you also can’t get away from problems with the urinary tract without mentioning Uva Ursi, or Bearberry. This plant has been used for many years to treat common ailments of the urinary tract. It is an antibacterial,anti-inflammatory and antiseptic.

Old School Remedies

Another favorite is Buchu. Buchu has been used since the 17th century in South Africa. It was specifically used for kidney stones, muscle aches, and UTI’s. A brandy made with Buchu leaves is still made today and makes and excellent tonic for aiding in digestion. Also, something to be used topically for those sore back areas, is a warmed hay flower pack. Take a hay flower pack, warm it gently by steam, and place on the affected area. This should provide a measure of relief from the pain being caused by kidney stones. Changing certain aspects of the diet should also be considered to help combat chronic kidney stones. Juices from Fennel, Dill, Carrot, Alfalfa or Dandelion, are rich in minerals that will help the body not only deal with existing kidney stones, but help prevent further ones from forming. Another age old remedy that has been used, is Aloe Vera juice. It’s believed that drinking a cup of pure Aloe Vera juice a day can help stop kidney stones from forming in the first place. It may even help decrease the size of already existing kidney stones, resulting in the easier passage of them through the urinary tract. A sitz bath can also be very beneficial for the shooting pains that can result from kidney stones. This can help provide temporary relief.

Always be Careful

Generally, herbs are safe and should be treated as such. However, certain herbs may be more potent than others, and can cause adverse side effects, if not researched first. Uva Ursi, or Bearberry, for example, should not be taken by those who have kidney diseases. Also, Buchu should not be taken in excess or can have negative effects on the body. Pregnant women and nursing women, are should avoid these two herbs, and also should check with their doctor or a trusted herbalist, to see if these are safe to take during pregnancy or nursing. Please be cautious, and always, if you are unsure, please bring the issue up with your healthcare provider.

The use of garlic has been promoted as a natural cure for athlete’s foot since old ages and it is the only effective treatment for fungal infections. Garlic is an all-natural, anti-fungal and can be used on any region of the body affected by fungus.

What is athlete’s foot?

A fungal infection which is also termed as ringworm of the foot, Athlete’s foot is a disease occurring on the skin of your feet along with other places such as heels, palms, and between the fingers. A common tinea fungal infection which is easily spread and can be recognized through cracked, flaking, peeling skin between the toes or side of the foot. Red and itchy skin characterize with burning or stinging pain showing blisters that ooze or get crusty.

Natural cure for Athlete’s foot

The fungus causing Athlete’s foot is known to grow in moist and warm places. Anti-fungal medications are used for the treatment of Athlete’s foot but natural cure and remedies along with cleanliness measures are the best bet to take care of the infection.

Vinegar, essential oils such as lavender and peppermint oil have been used efficiently for the treatment of Athlete’s foot. A plethora of natural cures are available for the Athlete’s foot including the cure of tea tree essential oil, tea, apple cider vinegar and even yogurt, Garlic has also been used as an effective remedy in the treatment of Athlete’s foot.

Garlic Athlete’s Foot

Can garlic cure Athlete’s foot?

For a huge population of herbalists and nutritional consultants, garlic is the first choice supplement and highly recommended anti-fungal antiseptic. A small number of research studies have supported the use of garlic in treating Athlete’s foot owing to its antimicrobial properties. Garlic contains a chemical called as ajoene which has been reported to be effective against the tinea fungus leading to Athlete’s foot. Research studies have reported and established garlic to be effective against a wide number of fungal infections. A research conducted in the year 2000 have demonstrated that if mild gastric solutions are applied twice daily, it can have 100 per cent cure rate compared with Lamisil which is a drug used in the treatment of Athlete’s foot. Garlic is applied to skin to treat fungal infections, warts and corns including fungal infections like ringworm, jock itch and Athlete’s foot.

How does garlic work?

The chemical known as allicin and ajoene are the reason for the benefits of garlic in certain conditions. These impart the antibiotic, anti fungal and antiviral activity to garlic.

How to use garlic?

1. Finely crushed clove of garlic can be added to a foot bath in which the affected foot can be soaked for approximately 30 minutes.

2. A few garlic cloves are minced with olive oil and then rubbed on affected area with the help of a cotton ball.

3. Garlic gel containing 0.6% ajoene is applied to the skin but gel with higher concentration of ajoene up to 1% is considered to be effective in the treatment of Athlete’s foot.

4. Garlic oil can be applied directly to the affected area for the treatment of the condition.

5. Garlic can also be liberally added to soups, salad dressings and casseroles.

6. Dusting your feet generously with garlic powder before wearing footwear or socks is also considered to be a powerful treatment providing results within a couple of days.

7. A herbal salve can be prepared with the use of garlic and other herbs combination for Athlete’s foot.

Garlic and other herbs such as Echinacea root, black walnut hulls are taken and an oil infusion is prepared with the help of olive oil. The oil and herb infusion is strained through a cheesecloth collecting almost a cup of herb infused oil. Melt beeswax (1-2 ounces) on allow heat and add the herb infused oil to prepare a salve. This salve can be applied directly to the dried affected area every night following a foot soak and once in the morning.

8. Garlic is also used in combination with tea tree oil to relieve itching and burning between your toes in Athlete’s foot. About 2-3 cloves of garlic are crushed and blended and then added to a little rubbing alcohol, 1/8 teaspoon of tea tree oil and 2 teaspoon of potassium soap and then the feet are soaked in this foot bath.

Is it safe?

Garlic is generally safe and with mild and uncommon side effects. It has been seen that some individuals may develop allergic reactions with the use of garlic.

Always keep garlic in your kitchen to keep up the good health along with exquisitely flavored food.

Research studies conducted on chamomile tea have shown that herbal tea consisting of chamomile combined with vervain, licorice, fennel and mint balm given in a dosage of 5 ounce three times a day showed significant decrease in the colic symptoms.

How to make chamomile tea for babies

Boil a cup of water and steep the chamomile flowers for about 20 minutes. Strain out the chamomile flowers and store in air tight containers. Take approximately ¼ cup of tea and ¼ cup of water in a baby bottle. This diluted tea is given to the baby to treat colic and calm fretful babies.

Is it a safe herb

The only problem with chamomile is that it may have a binding effect so should not be given to constipated babies. Extremely rare cases may exhibit an allergic reaction or show a side effect. But as per evidence, chamomile is by far one of the safest herbs.

Clove is a herb and its oils, dried flower buds, leaves and stems are used to make medicine. Clove is used in preparing tooth pastes and mouthwashes.

Packed with nutrients

Cloves are spices which are power packed with the goodness of a plethora of nutrients from manganese, omega 3 fatty acids, Vitamin K, dietary fibers and flavonoids to carbohydrates, sugars and sodium. Along with a wide range of medicinal benefits, the most common and well-known use of clove and clove oil is in tooth aches.

Use of clove in toothache

Clove is used topically for toothaches, to relieve pain during dental procedures and also while tooth extractions. Clove also acts as a counter-irritant for pain and for the inflammation of mouth and throat. It is also applied on dry sockets following tooth extraction. Clove oil or clove is used for providing temporary pain relief.

What makes it work?

The eugenol content present in clove oil is responsible for decreasing pain. The active chemical in clove possesses antioxidant, antiseptic, analgesic and local anesthetic properties. This makes its use in tooth pain valuable.

Is it safe?

Clove has been safely used in food for long, but larger doses used for medicinal purposes may lead to toxicity. It is suggested that children should not take clove in large amounts as it may lead to severe health hazards. Clove oil is safe for topical application on gums, tooth pulp but its overuse or frequent applications may cause damage to the gums, tooth pulp, skin and mucus membranes. Children should not use clove oil for its severely damaging effects in them.

The research on clove

Research has shown that application of clove is efficient in numbing the tissue against the pain and the effect was at par with benzocaine. A clinical trial performed on maxillary canine teeth of volunteers also showed no significant difference between the benzocaine and clove oil and the effect was visible within 5 minutes of application.

How to use clove in home remedies?

Whole clove or clove oil can be used as remedy in alleviating tooth pain and sore gums. Some of the ways in which clove can be employed in alleviating the tooth ache and sore gums are discussed below.

1. Clove oil is applied on a cotton ball and used as a clove compress on the sore tooth or gums.

2. The simplest remedy is to place few whole cloves in your mouth, moisten them with saliva which is then softened. After the clove is softened, it is bruised between non-painful molars to release oil.

3. Clove can be grounded into a powder and used in mouth of the pain is so much that it is difficult to crush them in mouth.

4. Clove can also be combined with a chewing gum which can be kept in the mouth and chewed for a few seconds.

5. Clove oil can also be directly rubbed on the affected area in the tooth and sore gums. Use a diluted form of clove oil for this purpose.

6. Dental compress can also be made by mixing 2 drops of pure clove oil with ¼ teaspoon olive oil and saturating a cotton ball or a gauze pad with this diluted oil and placing it beneath the affected tooth.

7. Whole Cloves can be mixed with cayenne pepper to make an effective toothache remedy. This can be prepared by crushing a few whole cloves and mixing it with equal parts of cayenne pepper powder and then making a thick paste with the help of a few drops of water. This paste can be applied directly to relieve tooth aches.

One of the oldest folkloric remedies, Fire Cider still holds a place in many people’s hearts today. While a lot of people are drawing on recipes that have been handed down for generations and generations, with many variations, it was always called by one name- Fire Cider. Recently, some folks have been trying to trademark the Fire Cider name, and have caused a world wide uproar, for many believe that it is not something that can be given to one company, as it has ALWAYS been, and always will be, Fire Cider. Regardless of the stance you take, Fire Cider has an abundant amount of benefits, and with a little time, relatively easy to make.

Make a Batch for those Winter Months

It’s not uncommon to hear of stories passed down, of grandmothers showing their daughters and grandchildren how to make and prepare Fire Cider. Because of the ingredients, Fire Cider packs a powerful punch when it comes to those bothersome colds and flus in the winter months. Because it has many immune system boosting constituents, it’s no wonder it’s been used for hundreds of years to stay healthy. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. So, what’s in it? Some of you may be surprised that you may have the majority of the ingredients already in your own kitchen. Making a basic Fire Cider is fairly easy, granted you are willing to wait the time it takes to macerate. Here’s a list of the most commonly used ingredients-Ginger Root, Horseradish Root, Onion, Garlic, Jalapeno Peppers,Lemon, Rosemary,Tumeric, Apple Cider Vinegar, and Raw Honey. While this is just a blueprint of what’s in Fire Cider, you can always add your own spices to make it personal, as well as to provide further positive benefits. Once the proper amount of these ingredients (to taste), have been established, take a sterile quart mason jar, and cover with cheesecloth or if you prefer, parchment paper. This will keep the metal (which could potentially have adverse effects on the quality of the Fire Cider), away from the cider. Be sure to leave a little bit of headspace in the jar, approximately 1/2 inch to 1 inch. Put the lid tightly on the jar, and put the jar in a cool, dark place. To completely get the maximized benefits from the Fire Cider, it will have to macerate about a month. Some people say two to three weeks, but others say more towards four. The best thing to do is to shake you jar gently every day, this will help all the ingredients mix well, as well as release it’s goodness. After the weeks have passed, take out your jar and taste what you’ve made. Now is the time to add a little sweetness if you prefer, and raw honey is the best for Fire Cider. You can add Fire Cider to veggie juices, to salads, rice, etc. or, you could also just take a tablespoon in the morning if you’re looking for a general tonic, or up to 3 tablespoons if you feel an infection or cold coming on.
